| Home | TRAIN WORLD SUBWAY A subway is an electric, underground railway designed to move large groups of people quickly to their destinations. Subways are most efficient in crowded urban areas where heavy traffic often slows down travel by bus or car. Subways have been used to transport goods, but the spreading out of industry and the growing use of trucks have brought an end to this use. London was the first city to have a subway. Now it has 10 lines that provide quick, cheap transportation to all parts of the city and suburbs. This subway system is often called the tube or the underground. Londons first underground passenger line opened in 1836. It used steam engine. Like the electric locomotive, it gets it power by an overhead wire. If there is serious damages such as a broken wire, then it will stall. There is another type of subway called the Light Rail Transit. Worst subway disaster The worst disaster ever recorded in the United States occurred on November 1, 1918 in Brooklyn, New York. A BRT line train de-railed, on a curve on Malbone street in Brighton Beach section. There were 102 people died as a result of the crash. The BRT line went bankrupt in December 31 because of the tragedy. If you have any questions or comments, please E-Mail the Webmaster |
